SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 2024 GRAND MARSHAL AND CONTRACT RENEWAL WITH GLASHEEN, VALLES & INDERMAN INJURY LAWYERS November 14, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association and Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers announced the renewal of their partnership to put on the Annual Sun Bowl Parade and announced that El Pasoan and former Sun Bowl Association Board President Wayne Thornton will be the Grand Marshal for the 88th Annual Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade.

The parade, which Thorton will lead, is set for Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024, at 10 a.m. (MT) on Montana Avenue in El Paso, Texas. Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers have renewed their title sponsorship through 2025, which will fund the resources needed to host the parade.

“We are extremely excited to renew the relationship and title sponsor for this great event and great El Paso tradition,” said Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “This is turning into a long-lasting relationship and we hope to continue to host the Glasheen, Valles and Inderman Sun Bowl Parade for many, many years.”

Wayne Thornton, the SBA President in 2005, remains on the Board of Directors for the association and retired from the City of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department in February of 2020, concluding a 43-year career with the department.

“There are few people who represent the El Paso community as well as Wayne [Thornton] does,” said Olivas. “What he has done for us here at the Sun Bowl Association is tremendous! From helping with the Charm Camp to the Basketball Skills Camp, Wayne is more than deserving of this honor.”

Thornton has made such an impact in El Paso that he had a building renamed after him in February of 2023. As his name was already known in the El Paso community for decades, from his weekly column in the El Paso Times to his involvement in local sports, the City of El Paso honored him, making his name known for years to come, proudly presiding over the old Grandview Community Center.

“I’m beyond honored to be able to lead the Sun Bowl Parade as the Grand Marshal,” said Thornton. “It’s especially neat as I will get to experience this parade as a participant as I typically volunteer and help on parade day.”

Thornton grew up on Fort Bliss where his father was stationed and attended Burges High School.

One of the things Thornton is most known for is his coaching in women’s intramural basketball at UTEP. He then moved over to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department in 1978, where he started at Lincoln Recreation Center under the Spaghetti Bowl and stayed for 28 years.

“I knew coaching was not my forte and that I could reach more lives through Parks and Recreation,” he said.

Thornton served on many boards, from the YWCA to the Police Department’s Crime Stoppers and, as already mentioned, the Sun Bowl Association.

Although, according to Thornton, the single biggest thing he was ever part of was the Junior League’s Midnight Basketball program, which he helped start in 1994 at a time when El Paso faced problems with street gangs and drive-by shootings.

“We had kids playing in the league that couldn’t play a lick of basketball,” Thornton said. “They were terrible. But they could open your locked car door in three seconds.”

Midnight Basketball caught on, taking hundreds of young men off the streets at night for practice and for weekend games during the trouble times between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Midnight Basketball ran from 1994 until 2003, the time by which the El Paso Police Department had a handle on the sharply declining rate of gang violence. Times have changed, and El Paso is not the city it was in the ‘90s, but Thornton said, “There will always be a need to help our troubled youth.”

Thornton is currently the point of contact and takes the lead on the Sun Bowl Basketball Skills Camp as well as the Sun Bowl Cheer Camp, events that coincide with the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational and Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game.

This year’s Glasheen, Valles and Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade will be on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024 at 10 a.m. (MT) on Montana Avenue and will be televised on KTSM News Ch. 9.

This will be the fourth parade with Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers as the title sponsor.

Peter Piper Pizza Punt, Pass & Kick – WINNERS ANNOUNCED October 9, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Peter Piper Pizza Sun Bowl Punt, Pass & Kick was held on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Sun Bowl Stadium on the UTEP campus with over 120 participants joining in on the fun on a beautiful fall evening.

The event was free to youth ages 6-15 in and around the Borderland. The winners from each age group received tickets to the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game, which will be played on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024 and will also be honored in the Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade that runs on Thanksgiving morning.

“We had a great time and the youth really enjoyed the event,” Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “The Sun Bowl Association is grateful to our partner, Peter Piper Pizza, who values hosting events like this for our community.”

All participants also received a T-shirt and water bottle.

FREE FOR THE KIDS - Peter Piper Pizza Punt, Pass & Kick October 2, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Peter Piper Pizza Sun Bowl Punt, Pass & Kick is set for Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. (MT) in Sun Bowl Stadium on the UTEP campus. The free event is open to youth (ages 6-15) in and around the Borderland.

The winners from each age group will receive tickets to the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game, which will be played on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024 and will also be honored in the Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade that runs on Thanksgiving morning.

The first 100 kids to check-in at the event (Tuesday, Oct. 8) will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. Sizes are limited.

SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES RENEWED PARTNERSHIP WITH TITLE SPONSOR AND 2024 PARADE THEME September 18, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association and Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers announced on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2024, the renewed partnership between the two organizations to continue to host the Annual Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade on Thanksgiving morning in El Paso, Texas.

The 88th Annual Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade theme is “Celebrate, Honor & Remembering All the Heroes Who Have Served." All floats must have a design that includes mascots, characters, or spokespersons as a focal point that honors and celebrates “Heroes who have served,” such as a firefighter, military member, law enforcement official, educator, custodian, farmers, etc.

“We are beyond grateful to have Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers back as our title sponsor for this wonderful El Paso tradition,” said Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers have been a great partner and truly understand what this event means to the community.”

The partnership is extended through 2025 and helps to provide funding for many items involved in putting this 88-year event on.

“We are looking forward to another year of excitement at the 88th Annual Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Parade,” said partner Noe Valles of Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers. “The theme is great as it honors many who deserve the recognition and shows our thankfulness to our heroes with the vibrant energy of music and the spectacular designs of amazing floats.”

This year’s parade will be on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024 at 10 a.m. (MT) on Montana Ave. and will be televised on KTSM News Ch. 9.

“We are excited to see what everyone builds and produces for this year’s parade with the theme “Celebrate, Honor & Remembering All the Heroes Who Have Served," said Sun Bowl Special Events Director Joe Daubach. “The work on the floats has already started and we hope more want to join in on this great El Paso tradition.”

This will be the fourth parade with Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers as the title sponsor.

Chick-fil-A Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Select ‘Em Contest: Weekly Winner & Upcoming Games September 16, 2024

SUN BOWL ADULT FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY GOODWILL INDUSTRIES OF EL PASO AWARDS CASH PRIZES OVER THE WEEKEND August 26, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association, Goodwill Industries of El Paso and the Southwest Flag Football League awarded $12,000 in prize money to winners of the Fourth Annual Sun Bowl Adult Flag Football Tournament presented by Goodwill Industries of El Paso over the weekend of August 23-25 at the Westside Sports Complex in El Paso, Texas.

The tournament, which started with approximately 35 teams in its first year, has grown to 75 teams this year, competing in various divisions of play, including a coed division, women’s divisions and five different men’s divisions. Teams and players from as far San Antonio, Denver and Wisconsin made the trek to El Paso to participate in this fun community event.

“It’s great that this event continues to grow year-after-year and we really believe that it will continue to grow, especially with the popularity of the sport now,” said Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “We continue to work hard to reach our next goal of bringing in more teams from out of town, which will have a positive impact on our city and economy.”

CBS and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Renew Partnership August 19, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and CBS Sports have come to an agreement to renew the partnership for four more years, with the contract being extended through 2030, as announced on Aug. 19, 2024.

For the 56th consecutive game, CBS Sports will continue to bring viewers all the color, artistry and drama inherent to the nation’s second oldest bowl game with live coverage of the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at Noon (MT). It represents the second longest-running sporting event broadcast on the same network.

“We cannot find words to show our appreciation for the partnership we have with CBS so as the saying goes ‘A picture is worth a 1,000 words’ but in this case, a continued broadcast is worth even more,” Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “Only one other sporting event has been on one network longer than the Sun Bowl.”

“The Sun Bowl is one of CBS Sports’ longest-standing partners, as we’ve been proud to broadcast the game for more than 50 years,” said Dan Weinberg, EVP, Programming, CBS Sports. “We’re thrilled to be extending our great relationship with the Sun Bowl, which represents the culmination of our college football season in a game that annually showcases a compelling matchup in El Paso.”

The Sun Bowl was first televised on CBS in 1968 when Auburn defeated Arizona 34-10 with Lindsey Nelson and Hall-of-Famer Frank Gifford announcing the game.

“We have such a great relationship with CBS and they have treated us extremely well over the years, it’s simply the logical and right thing that we honor the company as a Sun Bowl Legend,” Olivas said. “CBS has helped put us among the best-of-the-best bowl games in the country and we cannot thank them enough.”

The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl has also been blessed to have one of the best television-sports producers in the industry to help create the great images that many see on their television sets. Coordinating Producer Craig Silver was inducted as a Legend of the Sun Bowl in 2008 after contributing to the network’s production of the bowl from 1983-2005, and again from 2008-23. Silver has been CBS Sports’ college football lead game producer for 25+ years and has won multiple sports Emmy Awards.

Kellogg’s and CBS announced on Thursday, June 6, 2024, that the 91st Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Game is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. The game will kick-off at Noon (MT) and be televised on CBS for the 56th consecutive year, which is the longest running partnership between one bowl game on one network.

2024-25 SUN COURT ANNOUNCED August 1, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association announced the 2024-25 Sun Court sponsored by Cielo Vista Mall, including a new Sun Queen, Lady-in-Waiting, and Sun Princesses on Wednesday, July 31 at the El Paso Country Club.

Nine new Sun Princesses joined the Sun Court, along with the new Sun Queen, Raegan Jabor and Lady-in-Waiting Ashley Rios as ambassadors for the Sun Bowl Association, while also representing the City of El Paso.

“We’re one of only two bowl games with a group of representatives like our Sun Court, which is such an important part of our association and events,” said Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “This is a remarkable group of outgoing young women who will surely make a positive impact on our community and beyond.”

The new Sun Queen Reagan Jabor said, “This opportunity has allowed me to be an ambassador for our vibrant community, and I am deeply grateful for it. I want to encourage young women to engage more actively with their local and school communities.”

The Sun Court Coronation has been a part of the Sun Bowl since the first-ever college Sun Bowl game played in 1936. Coronation played a huge social role in the “Sun Carnival”, the week-long pageantry associated with the Sun Bowl.

According to the 1938 Sun Bowl game program, “The social side of the Sun Carnival centers around the Coronation of the Sun Queen with her Lady-In-Waiting and Royal Court of Princesses from all the cities of the Sun Empire and the Grand Ball tendered by the Association in honor of Her Majesty and Court.”

Today, the Sun Court serves as ambassadors for the Sun Bowl Association and the City of El Paso. The ladies of the court volunteer at various community events and make appearances at the Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Sun Bowl Parade, WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, the Sun Bowl Basketball Skills Camp presented by Marathon Petroleum, Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Peter Piper Pizza Punt, Pass & Kick, the Sun Bowl Adult Flag Football Tournament presented by Goodwill Industries of El Paso and many other events throughout the year.

Raegan Jabor, daughter of Mark & Michelle Jabor, is a student at Texas Tech University, where she is pursuing a major in landscape architecture and a double minor in sustainability and architecture. She is actively involved in campus life as a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and serves as an event planner for the Student American Society of Landscape Architecture (SASLA). Her academic and extracurricular pursuits reflect a dedication to creating sustainable and innovative designs in the field of landscape architecture. This summer, Raegan has worked for Hall Law Firm and Inspired Interiors. Raegan is looking forward to her upcoming internship in Australia this spring, where she will further her knowledge in sustainable research and eco-friendly architectural designs. Raegan’s career goals include working for a large landscape Architecture Firm where she can further enrich her understanding and experience of innovative design practices and environmental stewardship in a diverse and dynamic setting.

Raegan had the honor of serving as Sun Princess from 2023-2024 and is currently thrilled to step into the role of Sun Queen for 2024-2025. This opportunity has allowed her to be an ambassador for our vibrant community, and she is deeply grateful for it. Her journey has inspired her to encourage young women to engage more actively with their local and school communities. By fostering a sense of community and involvement, she hopes to empower others to contribute positively and make meaningful changes within their own neighborhoods.

LADY-IN-WAITING
Ashley Rios, daughter of Daniel & Patricia Rios, graduated from Silva Health Magnet High School and most recently earned her degree from Texas A&M University. She is continuing on by pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health, with a focus on Health Promotion and Community Health Science. During high school, Ashley was actively involved in the National Honor Society and the Silverettes Dance Team. She is now a member of the Mexican Student Association, where she has recently finished her term as Outreach Chair Officer. In this role, she organized fundraising events for the Brazos Interfaith Immigration Network while attending to student’s educational needs and will continue her involvement as the organization’s advisor.

Ashley has gained substantial experience as a Vaccine Mixer at the University Medical Center COVID Vaccination Hub, where she assisted in vaccinating over 50,000 individuals. She also interned at Southwest Coalition for Life, focusing on outreach initiatives for women’s health.

Currently, she works as a graduate assistant in the Prevention and Population division at University Health Services at Texas A&M, where she supports the mental and physical well-being of students.
Additionally, Ashley is well-acquainted with the Sun Bowl through her volunteer work at the annual Fan Fiesta and is eager to continue representing the Sun City as Lady-in-Waiting for the 2024-2025 Sun Court.

PAC-12 LEGACY SCHOOLS TO PLAY IN PAC-12 BOWL GAMES July 16, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association, Pac-12, ACC, Big 10 Conference and Big 12 Conference have come to an agreement for the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons where the 10 schools leaving the Pac-12 will still play in Pac-12 affiliated bowls the next two seasons and not in bowl tie-ins with their new conferences.

The announcement came following the recent conference football media days and conference meetings.

“We are grateful and excited to still maintain our relationships with teams that are making moves,” Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “This will help the transition in the future, whatever that may be.”

The contracts between the conferences and the bowls don’t end until after the 2025 season. With only Oregon State and Washington State remaining in the Pac-12 in 2024, the six bowls with Pac-12 ties could not be filled without drawing from other conferences.

Due to the mass departure of Pac-12 schools, all stakeholders agreed that the former Pac-12 programs, referred to as “Pac-12 legacy schools,” along with Oregon State and Washington State, would continue to participate in Pac-12 bowl games until the new bowl contracts commence in 2026.

Oregon State and Washington State are the only two schools remaining with Pac-12 designation. Oregon, Washington, UCLA, and USC are now members of the Big Ten Conference. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah are now members of the Big 12. Stanford and Cal are now members of the ACC.

After the 12-team College Football Playoff field is selected, the former Pac-12 bowl-eligible teams will be considered part of the Pac-12’s bowl pool. This will keep Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington (Big Ten), Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah (Big 12), and Cal and Stanford (ACC) from participating in their new conference bowl games until 2026.

The six Pac-12 bowl tie-ins in 2024 and 2025 are the Alamo Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Los Angeles Bowl and the Independence Bowl (in 2024)/ESPN event bowl (in 2025).

The Rose Bowl, which is now part of the College Football Playoff rotation, is no longer tied to the Pac-12.

The order of selections made by the bowl games will remain the same, however, the process of the selections remains unknown.

The Alamo Bowl has the first pick from the Big 12 and Pac-12 after the College Football Playoff. It will be able to select any Pac-12 legacy school or Oregon State/Washington State, regardless of record if the teams are bowl-eligible.

TONY THE TIGER® RECLAIMS SUN BOWL TITLE PARTNERSHIP July 2, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – As football teams require GR-R-REAT teamwork on the field, WK Kellogg Co and the Sun Bowl Association have found that the two are spectacular teammates when it comes to hosting the annual Tony the Tiger® Sun Bowl. Because of that, there is a renewed contract for WK Kellogg Co to sponsor the Tony the Tiger® Sun Bowl game for at least two more years.

The Sun Bowl Association and WK Kellogg Co agreed to two years of sponsorship with the option to sign for two more years after the 2025 game. The Tony the Tiger® Sun Bowl features the first mascot to lend its’ name to a college football bowl game. What’s more, Tony the Tiger and the Sun Bowl will continue to promote and focus on the Sun Bowl Association’s inaugural mission – helping kids play sports.

The 91st Annual Tony the Tiger® Sun Bowl Game is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024, at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas. The game kicks-off at Noon (MT) and will be televised on CBS for the 56th consecutive year, which is the longest running partnership between one bowl game on one network.

TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR 2024 WESTSTAR DON HASKINS SUN BOWL INVITATIONAL June 25, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association and WestStar have announced the four teams playing in the 63rd Annual WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, highlighted by two teams playing in the NCAA Tournament, with Yale, Jackson State, Akron and UTEP converging on the floor of the Don Haskins Center for the two-day holiday classic on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21, 2024.

All four teams have a very deep basketball tradition and plenty of success.

“The WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational is a staple here in El Paso and every team that has been here before is always excited to come enjoy the great competition as well as the Sun Bowl hospitality,” said Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “Akron and Jackson State are itching for a return visit to the Borderland, and we know that Yale, who is making its first appearance in our tournament, will leave with a great experience and memories.”

Akron Zips
Akron won the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in 2016, its only trip to the holiday classic, defeating UC Irvine in game one and Maryland Eastern Shore in the championship game.

Akron finished the 2023-24 season with a 24-11 record, going 13-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Forward Enrique Freeman led the team in scoring, averaging 18.6 PPG to go along with a 58.4 shooting percentage. He was also named All-MAC First Team and was unanimously voted as the MAC Player of the Year. Guard Ali Ali, who was also named All-MAC First Team, led the team in assists with 76 in only 27 games played.

The 2024-25 version of the Akron Zips basketball program added five transfers to the roster. Joining the team will be Isaiah Gray (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Bowen Hardman (Cincinnati, Ohio), Josiah Harris (Canton, Ohio), James Okonkwo (Maidenhead, England) and Seth Wilson (Lorain, Ohio).

The Zips are led by Head Coach John Groce, who completed his fifth season at Akron with a 94-59 overall record, including a 63-25 mark over the last three seasons. In Mid-American Conference play, the Zips are 54-38 under Groce and 40-16 over the last three years, owning the best winning percentage (.714) in the league.

Groce has a long track record of building championship caliber teams and all-around successful young men. The program’s mission “to be impactful”, and the vision “OneAkron”, resonates with everyone involved in the program as he is notorious for saying “It takes a village.”

The 2023 season saw Groce lead the Zips to a third-place finish in the MAC where they eventually fell to Kent State in the semifinals.

Jackson State Tigers
Jackson State is making its third appearance at the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational participating in 2000 and 2006 while going 1-3 overall in the holiday tournament. The Tigers had an All-American in guard Ken Evans Jr., who was named to the 16th HBCU Division I college basketball All-America teams powered by BOXTOROW. He was also named an HBCU National Co-Player of the Year.

Evans leads the SWAC in scoring (18.8), is tied for sixth in assists (93), averaged 5.4 rebounds per game, and shot 39 percent from three-point range. He had 11 games of scoring 20 or more points and scored 30 or more points three times including a season-high 37 points against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3/7). Evans was also named SWAC Player of the Year.

Jackson State is led by former NBA All-Star and NBA Champion Moe Williams. In his first season, Williams defied the odds of a predicted seventh-place finish as he led the Tigers to a tie for third place and a berth in the SWAC Tournament semifinals. The Williams era was sparked by a win over SMU during non-conference play en route to a 12-6 conference record.

Williams spent 14 years in the NBA, averaging more than 13 points and nearly five assists per game. Drafted by Utah, Williams would play his rookie season with the Jazz before spending the next four seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. Williams played three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2008-11) where he teamed up with LeBron James and helped the Cavs post a league-best 66 wins in 2008-09 and a berth in the NBA Finals. Williams was selected to the NBA All-Star Game in his first season with Cleveland.

Yale Bulldogs
The Yale men’s basketball team had another memorable season in 2023-24 reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 3 seed Auburn 78-76 in round one. The 2023-24 season will go down as one of the most successful seasons in school history. The Bulldogs won an NCAA Tournament game for just the second time after capturing the Ivy League Tournament title for the third time, while winning 23 games, matching the most in the modern era of Yale Basketball.

This will mark Yale’s first ever trip to the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

The Bulldogs are led by James Jones, the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at Yale and one of the most successful coaches in Ivy League history, was named Yale’s head coach on April 27, 1999. He enters the 2023-24 season with 373 career victories, which is the second most in league history, and his 201 Ivy wins are also the second most in league history. Jones’ .624 winning percentage in Ivy League games is by far the highest in Yale history.

Jones, the longest tenured coach in the league, has guided the Bulldogs to six Ivy League championships – 2002, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2023 – three NCAA Tournament berths – 2016, 2019, 2022 – and seven postseason appearances. When the Ivy League Tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, the Bulldogs were awarded the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning the regular season title, but the NCAA Tournament was ultimately canceled as well.

UTEP Miners
The UTEP Miners are 87-29 all-time in the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational after winning two games in the tournament last year, marking the 33rd time that the Miners have won the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational title.

UTEP was just one win shy of making a trip to the NCAA Tournament after falling in the title game of the CUSA Tournament. The Miners finished the year with a winning record, going 13-5 in the Don Haskins Center while averaging 72.6 points per game on the year. Guard Tae Hardy was voted to the 2023-24 NABC All-District second team after another stellar season with the Miners.

The Miners look to improve again and have brought on NJCAA Second Team All-America selection Ahamad Bryum, who is also a former consensus top-100 player and a four-star recruit.

Head Coach Joe Golding, who led Abilene Christian to the NCAA Tournament in two of his final three seasons with the program and an upset win over third-seed Texas in the 2021 “Big Dance” was appointed the 20th head coach in UTEP men’s basketball history on April 13, 2021.

He will carry a career record of 210-192 (13 years) into the 2024-25 season, including a mark of 52-48 (three years) with UTEP.

He has enjoyed two winning seasons in three years at the helm of the Miners, including guiding UTEP to 18 victories and runner-up honors at the 2024 CUSA Championships. It marked the Orange and Blue’s first appearance in the championship contest of the league tournament since 2011. The run to the finals was unprecedented for the program for multiple reasons. UTEP’s No. 5 seed was the lowest in the 13 appearances that it has now made in a conference tournament championship game. The Miners took out the No. 1 seed, Sam Houston, 65-63, in the semifinals, their first win against a top seed at the league tournament since the 1993 WAC Championships. Furthermore, they became the first squad in school history to come back from double-digit deficits to win consecutive contests at the league tournament.

Goodwill has given a helpful sponsorship for the community event that will be held on Friday-Sunday, Aug. 23-25, 2024 at the Westside Sports Complex in El Paso, Texas.

The sponsorship helps to fund the monetary prizes, goes towards the rental of the facilities and so much more.

SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION INSTALLS NEW PRESIDENT AND HONORS VOLUNTEERS June 10, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association hosted a new president installation and honored volunteers at TopGolf on Sunday, June 9, 2024, announcing Michael Guerra as the new SBA President.

Michael Guerra is Vice President of Guerra Investment Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisory firm focusing on personalized portfolio and customized investment management for individuals, professional organizations, foundations, institutions, endowments and retirement plans. Prior to this, Michael served as the Chief Lobbyist and Vice President of Government Relations and Armed Forces for the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. In this role, he advocated for pro-El Paso public policy at the Federal, State, County and City levels of government and was the staff lead to create the influential presentations that led to successful results of the expansion of Ft. Bliss, Texas after the Base Realignment and Closure hearings. He was also instrumental in building several Nationally recognized Workforce Development programs in partnership with the US Department of Labor, Johns Hopkins University, and the US Chamber of Commerce.

Michael previously served as two-time President of the Amigo Airsho, Chairman of Leadership El Paso, and as a board member of Court Appointed Special Advocates, FBI Citizens Academy and Creative Kids.

Guerra has been recognized with El Paso’s Breakthrough Leader Award, Sun Bowl President’s Award, El Paso’s Top Young Business Professionals, US Army’s St. Barbara’s Distinguished Civilian Award, and is a graduate of the US Army War College Distinguished Civilian Leadership Program.

Guerra is a proud El Pasoan. He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico where he received his Bachelor’s degree in business administration. Guerra earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association and the Southwest Flag Football League have teamed up again to host the Fourth Annual Sun Bowl Adult Flag Football tournament in El Paso, Texas, Friday-Sunday, August 23-25, 2024. The three-day event features monetary prizes awarded to the champions.

The tournament will be played at the Westside Sports Complex in El Paso and with various levels to play in. The tournament levels are as follows:

to 16 teams will receive a $2,500 payout. Between 17 and 31 teams, the payout will be $3000, and a 32+ team bracket will receive a $4,000 payout.

The winner of the Men’s B – Intermediate Division, Men’s C – Recreations Division Men’s D-
Division and Coed C –Recreational Division will receive a $1,000 payout.

The winner of both 5-v-5 Divisions (men & women) will receive a $2,000 payout.

“We received feedback to add a 5-v-5 bracket so we decided to go with it,” Sun Bowl Association Special Events Director Joe Daubach said. “It’s been neat to see this event grow and it’s always exciting to be part of another Sun Bowl Association event that brings so many people together to showcase El Paso and our community’s hospitality.”

Tournament Chairman Adrian Morales said, “It is a huge honor for me to be part of such a great organization like the Sun Bowl Association while at the same time strengthening our local flag football community. Giving them an opportunity to compete against teams from California to East Texas and from Colorado to interior Mexico, is energizing.”

SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2024-25 SUN COURT May 31, 2024

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association is now accepting applications for the 2024-25 Sun Court.

Applications are available online at www.sunbowl.org or can be picked up at the Sun Bowl Association (SBA) office, located at 4150 Pinnacle St., Suite 100 in El Paso, Texas. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 28, 2024 by 3 p.m. (MT). All interviews will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024 beginning at 9 a.m. at the SBA offices.

The El Paso area will be represented by the city’s young women to serve as community ambassadors during all Sun Bowl events including the Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade on Thanksgiving morning and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl football game on December 31, 2024.

“The Sun Court has been an integral part of the Sun Bowl Association for over 90 years and they serve the purpose of being ambassadors for the Sun Bowl Association and the City of El Paso,” Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “We look forward to receiving applications from many wonderful women from El Paso selecting the best possible candidates to fill the Sun Court. Very excited to continue this storied tradition.”

The Sun Court dates back to 1935 when organizers planned the event as a companion to the first Sun Bowl game. This is a great time for young women to promote their city and to volunteer as community ambassadors. Contestants are selected based on poise, personality, communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants must also demonstrate knowledge of El Paso and all Sun Bowl Association events. Participants must be full-time students at a college or university and in good academic standing.

Eligibility and Rules:
All Sun Princess Applicants must fit criteria in order to be eligible.
•A female between the ages of 18-22 (as of Sept. 1, 2024) that has completed one year of college
•Have not been married and have not had any children
•Must be enrolled as a full-time student taking a minimum of 12 academic hours or full time in a graduate program
•A cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (Transcript must be included with application.)
•Sun Princesses may not hold any other title during the time they are members of the Sun Court (i.e. Miss El Paso, Miss Texas, etc.)
•Responsible for their own transportation costs to attend mandatory events

Application/Submission Process:
Official application, an official transcript, a ONE-PAGE resume, a color head shot no larger than 5×7, and an essay (500 words or less) telling us about yourself; include school activities and awards, community involvement, employment and why you want to be a part of the Sun Court. FINALISTS NAMED FOR SECOND CLASS OF BOWL SEASON BESTIES AWARDS April 10, 2024

DALLAS – Bowl Season has announced the finalists for the second class of the “Bowl Season Besties Awards” – created to recognize “best of the best” among the bowl games membership. The winners will be announced at the Bowl Season Annual Meeting in El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday, April 17.

Bowl Season assembled an awards committee two years ago to organize and create the Bowl Season Besties program, reflected from efforts around the 2022-23 Bowl Season. The committee established five award categories in which bowl organizations could put nomination submissions towards: Best in Events, Best in Student-Athlete Experience, Best in Community Engagement, Best in Marketing, and Best in Game Presentation.

“The purpose of the Bowl Season Besties is to honor “best-in-class” in the bowl industry,” said Bowl Season Executive Director Nick Caparelli. “In sharing and recognizing the finalists at the Bowl Season Annual Meeting, we hope these awards will spark ideas and help all bowls achieve even greater success. It’s always an honor to be recognized by your peers.”

The finalists were voted on by a committee comprised of Bowl Executive Directors and the Bowl Season Awards Committee. The winners of each award will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony at the Bowl Season Annual Meetings on Wednesday, April 17.

Best in Events
Many people think that bowls are “just a football game” – however, that is simply not the case. All bowls host multiple ancillary events in the days, weeks and months leading up to the game for the teams and for the fans. The winner of Best in Events will be selected based on the criteria of creativity, meeting set goals (For example: Tickets sales to an event, raising funds for community, etc.)

The winner of Best in Student-Athlete Experience will be selected based on creativity, student-athlete impact, community impact based on stated goals for the experience.
