EL PASO, Texas – With the COVID-19 situation around the country affecting Bowl Season, College Football and air travel, another team having issues fielding a team has given life to the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.
The Sun Bowl Association has announced that, due to Boise State dropping out of the Arizona Bowl, Central Michigan University has now accepted an invitation to play in the 88th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at 10 a.m. (MT) in El Paso, Texas.
The Barstool Arizona Bowl is, unfortunately, the fourth bowl game to be affected by COVID-19 in 2021.
CMU arrived in Tucson on Sunday and is ready to play. Being a four-hour drive from El Paso, the Chippewas are set up logistically to make the trip and compete on Friday.
The co-MAC West champion Chippewas will take on the Washington State Cougars after driving from the Arizona desert into the Borderland. This would still make it the second time in as many years that the Central Michigan Chippewas (8-4, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) would make a trip out west in postseason play. The last trip CMU made west of the Mississippi River was when it was in the 2019 New Mexico Bowl versus San Diego State.
The Chippewas are trying for their first bowl win since 2012, when they were victorious over Western Kentucky in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE
The Washington State Cougars (7-5) will be making their third appearance in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and will now face CMU, who is out of the Mid-American Conference
Under newly named first-year head coach Jake Dickert, the Cougars finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record, 6-3 in Pac-12 play. It also marks the sixth bowl appearance in seven seasons by the Cougars, and sixth-straight when not including the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
The 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl marks the 17th overall bowl game for the Cougar program.
In 2019, WSU fell short against Air Force at the Cheez-It Bowl in Phoenix, Ariz. In 2018, the Cougars came away with a 28-26 victory over No. 25 Iowa State in the Valero Alamo Bowl, en route to a program-record 11-win season and a No. 10 final ranking. Previously WSU has played in the Rose Bowl (1916, 1931, 1998, 2003), the Holiday Bowl (1981, 2003, 2016, 2017), the Aloha Bowl (1988), the Copper Bowl (1992), the Alamo Bowl (1994, 2018), the Sun Bowl (2001, 2015) and the 2013 New Mexico Bowl. The Cougars are 8-8 in bowl games all time.
Tickets for the 88th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl are on sale through Ticketmaster and the Sun Bowl Association office. The 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is set for Friday, Dec. 31 in Sun Bowl Stadium with kick-off scheduled for 10 a.m. (MT). The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
All information for the game can be viewed online through the link available at www.sunbowl.org. Customers and fans can also call the Sun Bowl Association office (915-533-4416) and are also invited to stop by the Sun Bowl Association office located at 4150 Pinnacle Street, Suite 100 in El Paso to purchase tickets.

EL PASO, Texas – The Bradley Braves took home the hardware after defeating UTEP 73-66 in the Championship game of the 60th Annual WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in the Don Haskins Center, Wednesday, December 22.
Bradley junior Terry Roberts earned MVP honors after collecting his first collegiate double-double – posting personal-best totals with 26 points and 11 rebounds and Bradley Head Coach Brian Wardle picked up win No. 100.
Sam Houston won the Consolation game defeating North Carolina Central, 68-51 after taking an early lead that the Bearkats never let go of. The Miners finished second and is now 89-29 all-time in the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.
“It was another wonderful tournament and event but one of the best parts of it all was that we were able to host four teams here in El Paso, Texas,” said Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “The games were exciting, and we are grateful to have this event after not having it in 2019. Congratulations to the Bradley Braves and good luck to all four teams with conference play just around the corner.”
GAME ONE RECAP – Sam Houston vs. North Carolina Central
The Bearkats (5-8) took an early lead over the Eagles of North Carolina Central and never lost it to take the 68-51 victory on Wednesday night. Sam Houston was led by guard/forward Savion Flagg, who tallied 17 points and eight rebounds. Guard Jaden Ray added 13 points and seven assists while forward Kian Scroggins added 10 points off the bench.
Sam Houston led by as many as 24 points in the second half when Ray connected on a 3-pointer and Flagg scored on a tip-in with just over 17 minutes left in the game. NCCU (6-9) answered with a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 12, but the Bearkats answered with its own 10-3 run to take a 57-38 lead, putting the game out of reach with less than eight minutes to play.
The Eagles scored the first basket of the game, but Sam Houston took over from there. Ray and Damon Nicholas Jr. sparked a 12-2 run to close out the half by each hitting a 3 and a pair of free throws. Flagg made it 36-21 in the closing seconds with a layup.
The Bearkats shot 47 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3. Sam Houston also outrebounded NCCU 38-27.
NCCU guard Ja’Darius Harris marked a season-high 15 points and guard Randy Miller Jr. added 10 points. Forward Marque Maultsby grabbed a season-high eight boards in addition to five points on the night.
GAME TWO RECAP – Bradley vs. UTEP
The Braves and the Miners played a tight first half before a UTEP run gave the hosts a little cushion at the break. Trailing, 24-20, the Miners scored 10-straight points to grab a 30-24 advantage en route to a three-point lead at the intermission, 33-30.
The Miners carried their momentum into the second half and a strong start put UTEP ahead by 14 points, 50-36, less than six minutes into the period. However, the Braves would not go away. Back-to-back triples from Roberts and Leons pulled Bradley within seven points, 52-45. Another 3-pointer from Leons just minutes later would then cut the deficit down to three, 54-51, with 11:27 left in regulation.
UTEP would hold its lead until under five minutes remaining when Bradley’s Rienk Mast nailed a 3-pointer to put the Braves in front, 62-61. Not long after, the score was tied at 64-all when Mast hit another three-pointer to give Bradley a lead it would not lose. The Miners did, however, get within one point but a Braves layup put them up by three and finished the game by hitting some clutch free throws to seal the 73-66 win.

We started the year out of sync … but we’re starting to find our rhythm now.”
Bradley totaled 48 second-half points, a season high for the team.

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association announced on Tuesday, Dec. 7 that current Mayor and former Title Sponsor Oscar Leeser, along with longtime volunteer Tomi Rystad are the 2021 Legends of the Sun Bowl for the 88th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.
Oscar Leeser, owner of Hyundai of El Paso, had been the title sponsor of the Sun Bowl football game for nine years (2010-2018) before becoming the title sponsor of the Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Parade in 2019 and 2020.
“Mayor Oscar Leeser has helped us out in more ways than just the title sponsorship and has always found ways to support the Sun Bowl Association,” said Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “When he jumped on board as the title sponsor of the Sun Bowl Parade, we knew that one day, we needed to induct him as a Legend of the Sun Bowl.”
Oscar Leeser’s Hyundai of El Paso helped the Sun Bowl Association with an 11-year partnership that made it possible to put on a historic college football game and host a wonderful pregame party, as well as helping to provide the support needed to build amazing floats and other resources that assist in making this 85-year event such a great success.
Hyundai of El Paso was established in 2001 as a family run business and is still thriving 20-years later.
“It was a true honor for Hyundai of El Paso to be the title sponsor of the Sun Bowl for all those years,” Mayor Leeser said. “There could not be a better place other than El Paso to bring visitors to. El Paso truly has everything from diverse cuisines to beautiful weather to one-of-a-kind shopping and we are grateful to have helped many others experience it all.”
The second inductee as a Legend of the Sun Bowl is Provisions Volunteer Tomi Rystad, who becomes the first woman to ever be inducted as a Legend of the Sun Bowl. Mrs. Rystad is in her 40th year as one of the leaders of the Provisions Committee and has made this a family affair as her husband volunteered for many years in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s while her children and grandchildren are currently helping out as well.
“Without passionate people like Tomi Rystad and her family, we could not provide the best hospitality in the bowl business,” Olivas said. “Tomi Rystad has really taught her family what it means to be committed and we are grateful for their commitment to the Sun Bowl Association.”
This year marks the 40th anniversary of something that began as a favor to a friend and has grown into an annual event for the Rystad family. They have joined countless others in making their own special contribution to what the Sun Bowl is known for, its hospitality.
“This is such an honor,” Rystad said. “A special thank you to Bernie [Olivas] and John Folmer for this gift and for being the first woman nominated. We really didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into when we first started doing this but to see our family grow with the Sun Bowl has really been a joy of my life.”
Tomi’s son, Allen, is now the head of the Provisions committee and is guided gracefully by his mother. The Provisions Committees that are seen all across the bowl industry, would not exist without the vision and commitment of Tomi Rystad and here family.
The 88th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl will feature a team from the ACC taking on a team from the Pac-12 in Sun Bowl Stadium on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021 with kickoff set for 10 a.m. (MT). The Legends of the Sun Bowl will be honored during pregame of this year’s game.

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association, Kellogg’s and Tony the Tiger have announced that Washington State will face Miami in the 88th Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Friday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. (MT) in Sun Bowl Stadium with the game being televised on CBS.
The Washington State Cougars (7-5) will be making their third appearance in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and will have a re-match of 2015 with Miami (7-5), who is out of the ACC. The Cougars beat the Hurricanes 20-14 in the 2015 matchup and knocked off Purdue in the 2001 Sun Bowl.
Miami’s appearance marks the ninth straight year and 45th time in school history the Hurricanes have competed in a bowl game. Miami owns a 20-24 overall record in previous bowl appearances.
“We are super happy about the match-up that we have, and it seems like both teams are very excited to come back to El Paso,” Executive Director Bernie Olivas said. “Our choices from the ACC were all plenty good but we have to wait for some other bowl to pick before us and we ended up with the best team possible that was left. I think these teams will give us a tremendous show.”
Miami has previously played in the Sun Bowl. In 2010, the Canes lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 33-17, and in 2015, Miami lost to their opponent in the game this year, Washington State, by a score of 20-14 in a driving snowstorm.
Miami’s matchup with Washington State is only the second all-time meeting between the two schools, the first being in the 2015 Sun Bowl Football game.

The motion was passed unanimously. It was decided to ask for public suggestions as to the name of this annual game, and the name “Sun Bowl” was submitted by Dr. C.M. Hendricks, who became the first president of the Sun Bowl Association.

“The Sun Bowl Association is excited to announce the ticket sale of this year’s Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game,” said Natalia Flores, current President of the Sun Bowl Association. “The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game brings economic development to the City of El Paso and is dependent on community support and fan ticket sales. We anticipate high demand, due to last year’s game cancellation and look forward to seeing you in the stands.”
The Sun Bowl Association encourages our fans to help send others to the game through our “Salute a Soldier Program” and “Take a Child to the Game Program.”
The “Salute a Soldier” program allows fans and companies the opportunity to give soldiers a memory to last a lifetime. Sponsors who make purchases through the “Salute a Soldier Program” give soldiers an opportunity to attend the game while your company is recognized during the game.
If a fan or company would prefer to take part in the “Take a Child to the Game” program, that person or company affords local children the opportunity to attend the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. With the game falling only six days after Christmas, this would make an excellent Christmas gift. The goal is to send 3,000 children to the game and give them an experience they will never forget. Along with the goodwill that comes with sending a child to the game, any person or company taking part in this program will receive recognition at the game.
Olivas mentioned, “The Sun Bowl Association would like to invite you to the Sun Bowl Stadium for a great way to end the year and bring in 2022. ABOUT THE SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION
The Sun Bowl Association is a volunteer based nonprofit 501©(3) organization. The Sun Bowl Association, with the help of over 700 volunteers, promotes and serves the El Paso community and features a year-round schedule of events, culminating with the Annual Tony the Tiger® Sun Bowl football game.
The Sun Bowl Association was founded in 1935 with a threefold purpose: 1) to present a football attraction of national importance, 2) to promote El Paso and the Southwest and 3) to generate tourist income for the area. On Oct. 18, 1934, at a meeting of the El Paso Kiwanis Club, Dr. Brice Schuller suggested that the club sponsor a football game on New Year’s Day, matching an El Paso High School All-Star Team against a worthy opponent. The motion was passed unanimously. It was decided to ask for public suggestions as to the name of this annual game, and the name “Sun Bowl” was submitted by Dr. C.M. Hendricks, who became the first president of the Sun Bowl Association.

EL PASO, Texas – Since its inception 60 years ago the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational has taken pride in hosting one of the top basketball tournaments in the country. The Sun Bowl Association and WestStar are pleased to announce the teams coming to El Paso for the WestStar Don Haskin Invitational, which will be held, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 21-22, in the Don Haskins Center.
The tournament committee is bringing in teams that have all recently won their conference championships. Joining the UTEP Miners in the Don Haskins Center this year will be Bradley University, Sam Houston State and North Carolina Central.
“We take great pride in bringing a competitive field to the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational,” said tournament director Barry Kobren. “This year is no exception with teams that will all be competing for an NCAA tournament bid next March. If past success is any indication, we will have a battle to see who wins the championship trophy.”
“WestStar is proud to continue its sponsorship of this long term El Paso competitive college basketball tournament” said David Osborn, President & COO of WestStar.
Bradley is making its first visit to the Sun Bowl Invitational. The Braves have had tremendous success under Coach Brian Wardle. In his first six seasons on the BU sideline, Wardle has built Bradley into a perennial Missouri Valley Conference contender, capped by winning back-to-back championships in 2019 and 2020. Bradley has a history with UTEP having faced them in a memorable NCAA tournament game in 1986. Bradley was led by its all-time leading scorer, Hersey Hawkins, while UTEP’s team featured Jeep Jackson and Tim Hardaway.
Sam Houston State will be making its third appearance in the Sun Bowl Invitational having been to El Paso in 2010 and 2015. The BearKats are led by head coach Jason Hooten, who has done nothing but win since he took over in 2010. He has averaged 20 wins a season and led the Kats to postseason play five times over a six-year period. Sam Houston won the Southland Conference in 2019 and participated in the NIT. The BearKats begin their first season in the Western Athletic Conference this year.
North Carolina Central is making its first appearance in the Sun Bowl Invitational and is led by Coach Levelle Moton, who completed his eleventh season at the helm. In 2019, the Eagles accomplished something that had not been done before in school history as it clinched a third-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance by winning the MEAC Tournament for a third-straight year. NC Central has appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. This year the Eagle’s basketball team was also featured on ESPN. Chris Paul and Stephen A. Smith produced The Undefeated presents “Why Not Us” an eight-episode documentary series examining the distinct culture, experiences and challenges of a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) athletic program.
The WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational values its relationship with the HBCU’s as this is the 17th time in 22 years that it will feature an HBCU team. The Sun Bowl Association believes this honors the legacy of the Tournament’s namesake, Coach Haskins.
The UTEP Miners under the direction of first-year head coach Joe Golding, bring back leading scorer Souley Boum, who averaged 18.8 points per game to rank third in C-USA in 2020-21 and earn a spot on the 2021 All C-USA third team.
Also back in the fold is Jamal Bieniemy, who paced the team with 4.0 assists per contest to rate sixth in the league. UTEP’s deep backcourt will also feature Christian Agnew (6.1 ppg) and Keonte Kennedy (8.6 ppg. 5.9 rpg). Veteran Tydus Verhoeven also returns for the Orange and Blue. The 6-9 forward led the Miners in field-goal percentage (62.7), offensive rebounds (47) and blocked shots (27). There are a bevy of newcomers for Golding, including Bonke Maring (Blinn College), Jorell Saterfield (Ranger College), freshman post Kevin Kalu, freshman point guard from France Kezza Giffa, Georgetown transfer Jamari Sibley and Oregon transfer Alfred Hollins.
“We have another competitive tournament lined-up for college basketball fans to enjoy,” said Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “This tournament has become a tradition and the history of teams and players that have come through El Paso is tremendous. Our basketball committee, which is led by Barry Kobren, continues to seek out and work towards bringing quality teams to the Don Haskins Center.”

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association announced the 2021-22 Sun Court, including a new Sun Queen, Lady-in-Waiting, and Sun Princesses on Friday, Aug. 6 at the El Paso Country Club.
Eight new Sun Princesses join the 2021-22 Sun Queen, Jaylene Placencia and Lady-in-Waiting, Paige Dorsey as ambassadors for the Sun Bowl Association, while also representing the city of El Paso.
“Our Sun Court is a very important part of our association and events,” said Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “These young ladies, who are all from El Paso, are on the road to become great leaders for our community and beyond. They represent the Borderland very well.”
The Sun Court Coronation has been a part of the Sun Bowl since the first-ever college Sun Bowl game played in 1936. Coronation played a huge social role in the “Sun Carnival”, the week-long pageantry associated with the Sun Bowl.
According to the 1938 Sun Bowl game program, “The social side of the Sun Carnival centers around the Coronation of the Sun Queen with her Lady-In-Waiting and Royal Court of Princesses from all the cities of the Sun Empire and the Grand Ball tendered by the Association in honor of Her Majesty and Court.”

The ladies of the court volunteer at various community events and make appearances at the All-America Golf Classic, the Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Day Parade, WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Helen of Troy Charm Camp and many other events throughout the year.

EL PASO, Texas – After there were no visitors in El Paso for the annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl game, the Sun Bowl Association and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl decided to help the local hotel and lodging association by donating $10,000.
Executive Director Bernie Olivas and SBA Board President Natalia Flores met with the El Paso Hotel and Lodging Association on Tuesday, January 19 at the El Paso Radisson Hotel to present the check, which will be distributed from the Hotel and Lodging Association to those who were laid off due to the Pandemic.
“One of the prime objectives of the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is to bring tourism to the city during a time when many people are not traveling. The Sun Bowl Association understands that the cancelation of the Tony the Tiger prevented the city from realizing the economic impact the game usually brings to our city,” Olivas said. “With many individuals and companies hurting during the pandemic, the Sun Bowl Association would like to donate $10,000 to the El Paso Hotel and Lodging Association to help those people in the hospitality industry that lost their jobs because of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The annual (Tony the Tiger) Sun Bowl game generally has about $14 million to $17 million in direct economic impact to the community in previous years and has reached amounts of up to $25 million, as it did in 2010 when Notre Dame took on Miami. Many, if not all, hotels tend to fill to capacity due to the extra visitors coming to El Paso for the game.
Kellogg’s has already made a large donation to ensure that Sun Bowl gameday workers that were scheduled to work the 2020 game would receive a paycheck this holiday season and also plans on donating one million meals to El Paso food banks.
The Sun Bowl Association anticipates that, with the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccine, the situation will improve and El Pasoans, as well as all college football fans will be able to enjoy the annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, 2021 in Sun Bowl Stadium.
QUOTE FROM EL PASO HOTEL AND LODGING ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, MARCO A. ORTEGA
“With the sincerest gratitude, it is an honor to accept this donation for our Hospitality community. Throughout the years, the Sun Bowl Association has demonstrated a deep commitment to our wonderful city and its residents. For many years, your dedication and support has repeatedly played a key role in our success in selling out our hotels during the last days in December. Our industry is thankful for all you have done.
There is no way to fully express our gratitude for your donation to our community, especially during these tough times. We at the El Paso Hotel and Lodging Association are continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of the Sun Bowl Association. It is our hope that this generous donation will help the hotels and their associates that have been negatively impacted due to loss of occupancy. We look forward to a continuing partnership with you.”
QUOTE FROM SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, NATALIA FLORES
“I am honored that the Sun Bowl Association and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is donating $10,000 to the El Paso Hospitality industry to supplement lost income as a result of the pandemic.”

ABOUT THE SUN BOWL ASSOCIATION
The Sun Bowl Association is a volunteer based non-profit 501 © 3 organization. The Sun Bowl Association, with the help of over 700 volunteers, promotes and serves the El Paso community and features a year-round schedule of events culminating with the Annual Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl football game.
The Sun Bowl Association was founded in 1935 with a threefold purpose: 1) to present a football attraction of national importance, 2) to promote El Paso and the Southwest and 3) to generate tourist income for the area.
On October 18, 1934, at a meeting of the El Paso Kiwanis Club, Dr. Brice Schuller suggested that the club sponsor a football game on New Year’s Day matching an El Paso High School All-Star Team against a worthy opponent. The motion was passed unanimously. It was decided to ask for public suggestions as to the name of this annual game, and the name “Sun Bowl” was submitted by Dr. C. M. Hendricks, who became the first Sun Bowl Association President.
The Sun Bowl football game was first played on January 1, 1935, as a fund-raising event for a local service club, to benefit underprivileged children and to finance improvement to the El Paso High School Stadium. It has grown into El Paso’s number one national attraction. The following year a weeklong schedule of events was added to the Sun Bowl festivities, and four other local service clubs (Rotary, Lions, Optimist and Active 20-30) joined the Kiwanis in coordinating the entire “Sun Carnival” calendar.
In 1936, New Mexico State and Hardin-Simmons Universities were invited to play, and the Sun Bowl has been a college game ever since.
