SUN BOWL LEGENDS NAMED GRAND MARSHALS OF THE GLASHEEN, VALLES & INDERMAN INJURY LAWYERS SUN BOWL PARADE October 5, 2022

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association (SBA) has announced on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022 that natives of El Paso and longtime volunteers and board members, John Folmer and Jimmy Rogers Jr. will be the 2022 Grand Marshals for the 86th Annual Glasheen, Valles & Inderman Injury Lawyers Sun Bowl Parade, which will be held Thanksgiving morning, November 24 at 10 a.m. (MT) in El Paso, Texas.

Jimmy Rogers, Jr. has been involved with the Sun Bowl Association for over 60 years and has served on the Sun Bowl Association Board of Directors and is the organization’s CBS liaison as well as the title sponsor liaison. He is also the chair emeritus of the Board of Directors, for which he has been a member for over 50 years. Rogers served as president of the Sun Bowl Association in 1970.

Most recently, Bowl Season inducted Rogers into the Bowl Season Leadership Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals or groups who, through their actions have contributed significantly to College Football Bowl organizations specifically, and to the entire bowl system in general. It also commemorates the history and tradition of college football bowl games by saluting the people who devoted themselves to furthering the benefits of bowl games for the advancement of their communities and college football.

“What a tremendous honor to be even considered as the Grand Marshal of the (Sun Bowl) parade, much less selected. I am humbled,” said Rogers. “The Sun Bowl Association has been near and dear to my heart for over 50 years. This means the world to me.”

One of the Sun Bowl trophies awarded after each bowl game is named in honor of Rogers – the Jimmy Rogers, Jr. Most Valuable Lineman Trophy. He has participated in CBS Television negotiations throughout the 50-plus year relationship with the network and was involved in negotiations for the bowl’s sponsorships with both John Hancock, Wells Fargo and Helen of Troy.

Rogers was honored with the Bud Dudley Bowl Executive Award at the All-American Football Foundation’s Banquet of Champions XVIII in 1999. Rogers has served as UTEP Touchdown Club President (1968) and UTEP Athletic Advisory Committee Chairman (1972). He was formerly the chairman of the El Paso Sports Council and was named to the El Paso Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.

Chairman of the Sun Bowl Football Committee, John H. Folmer became involved with the Sun Bowl Association in 1971 and has served on the football committee for 50 consecutive years. He has been chairman of the committee since 1981 and served as the president of the Sun Bowl Association in 2006.

“I am honored and humbled to be named as one of the Grand Marshals of the 2022 Sun Bowl Parade. I have always enjoyed my work with the bowl because it means so much to the citizens of El Paso and has showcased our city in such a positive way to the entire country. It has also kept me involved in the game that has meant so much to me,” Folmer stated.

The John Folmer Most Valuable Special Teams Player Trophy was established in his honor in 1994. The All-American Football Foundation honored Folmer with the Bud Dudley Bowl Executive Award at the Banquet of Champions in 1999. Folmer has been part of the Sun Bowl Association’s basketball committee, and was one of the charter members of the College All-America Golf Classic committee.

A graduate of Ysleta High School, Folmer went on to serve as team captain for the Arizona State University football team. He was a three-year letterman for the Sun Devils (1963-64-65). Folmer was honored in El Paso sportswriter Ray Sanchez’s book, “El Paso’s Greatest Sports Heroes” and was inducted as a Sun Bowl Legend in 2001.

“The Sun Bowl Association itself might not be in existence without Jimmy Rogers, Jr. and John Folmer. Jimmy was very instrumental in brokering the CBS Television relationship that is now going on 54 consecutive years and also spearheaded the drive to allow the Sun Bowl football game to receive rental car tax to help defray the costs of putting on the national game,” said SBA Executive Director Bernie Olivas. “John’s relationship with so many athletic directors and football coaches across the country helped secure two Power 5 conference schools to play in the game before they were Power 5 conferences. I am extremely proud to honor these two men as Grand Marshall’s of the Glasheen, Valles, & Inderman, Injury Lawyers Thanksgiving Day Parade.,”

This year marks the 86th edition of the annual parade, which is held on Montana Ave. and starts at Ochoa Street. It will be televised on KTSM News Channel 9 once again.

Past Grand Marshals include Aaron and Alivn Jones who played in the NFL and have the A&A All the Way Foundation (2020), WWII Veterans (2017), former W.B.A. light middleweight Boxing Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout (2013), legendary UTEP men’s basketball player Nolan Richardson (2014), former UTEP men’s basketball coach Don Haskins, former PGA player Lee Trevino and the 1966 NCAA Champion-UTEP men’s basketball team (2015).

The Sun Bowl parade started its humble beginnings on New Year’s Day in 1936 and has stood the test of time as an annual tradition here in El Paso. The Sun Bowl Association made the switch to a Thanksgiving Day celebration in 1978 and has been the tradition since.

On Oct. 18, 1934, at a meeting of the El Paso Kiwanis Club, Dr. Brice Schuller suggested that the club sponsor a football game on New Year’s Day, matching an El Paso High School All-Star Team against a worthy opponent. The motion was passed unanimously. It was decided to ask for public suggestions as to the name of this annual game, and the name “Sun Bowl” was submitted by Dr. C.M. Hendricks, who became the first president of the Sun Bowl Association.
